“La question cruciale de tout son travail n’est pas le temps, comme on le dit souvent, faute de mieux, par paresse théorique, et comme il le dit lui-même, tout en démontrant par ailleurs le contraire, mais l’espace” ! En réponse à la proclamation manifeste et enthousiaste du critique de cinéma Jean-Paul Fargier à propos de l’œuvre du vidéaste américain Bill Viola en 1986, cet ouvrage est un sondage des espaces vidéo pluriels de l’artiste à travers l’étude d’un corpus riche de monobandes et d’installations réalisées entre 1976 et 2003. La multiplicité de l’espace dans l’œuvre de Bill Viola cherche notamment à démontrer comment dans leur pluralité, leur qualité de perpétuelle métamorphose, les espaces hétéroclites composés ou installés par l’artiste vidéo acquièrent une autonomie opiniâtre dont l’expression dévorante est supportée par les corps imprudents qui s’y aventurent, parfois même celui du spectateur...
